The Smoke Has Cleared

So the fire was really bad a few days ago, but it's been pretty good since then. The smoke has cleared really well. So my week has been really boring!! Again. Everyone we have been teaching have all skipped town to escape the fire. We are doing well tho, members are feeding us super well. The same fam that fed us on Thanksgiving is feeding for Christmas so we are super excited! Oh yeah and transfers took place this last week. Elder Emerson is leaving for Oxnard! I'll be staying and I'll get Elder Goodman who is one of the coolest Elders in the field. I am so excited to get to Skype you on Christmas! I hope you are all doing well and feeling the spirit of Christmas. Stay Safe!!

I invite you all to think of the Savior this season if you haven't been. I can promise you of the blessings and miracles you will have. I love and miss all you so much!
-Elder Smith

So mom, you are going to need to get a Skype account, it's completely free haha. I will probably be able to call earlier in the day. BE SURE TO EMAIL ME YOUR SKYPE NAME DURING THE WEEK BEFORE NEXT MONDAY SO I CAN KNOW WHAT TO TYPE IN TO CALL.

Welcome Baby Wren

Baby Wren looks so cute! Haha he looks just like Chan and Maddy hahaha that's soo weird! I can honestly say I miss the snow soo much, I don't like having a dry barren Christmas!

My week was so boring. I had to stay in all week due to the fire. So it started in Santa Paula which is pretty close to Santa Barbara, so in SB it's super smoky and ash is everywhere. We have to wear masks everywhere we go to avoid breathing in the ash and smoke. We may be evacuated if the fire gets any closer to us. I'll send a few pictures as well. I am still okay and I still love it out here. I hope all of you are well and Staying Safe! Love you all!

Light the World

HOLY COW!!! Wren is one of the cutest babies ever!! Wow! That is so exciting, I'll keep this short cause my week was so boring!! I didn't do much due to some conference this week and we got our smart phones!! I also got to go to Carpinteria on exchanges with an Elder Clark from Utah. He is super cool, he went to Lone Peak high school and knew Hayden Moss! So That was pretty cool! Um I decided I am going to live in Carpinteria forever now. L

I have just been able to recognize all the most amazing blessings that the Lord blesses us with when we do his will. All he asks of us is pretty simple and easy so long as we live righteously. This Christmas season I invite all of you to take on the initiative of Light The World. Because of how much this season reminds us to think of our Savior and his birth.

I have a firm testimony of the Gospel and all the blessings that come from it. I love all of you, Stay Safe!

Turkey, Turkey and more Turkey!

Looks like you all had tons of fun this Thanksgiving! I am bummed I missed out on the Turkey Bowl, but I am definitely glad I am out here serving the Lord. The Pizza oven looks great and it has been coming along quite quickly. I am so happy Dillon had a better week. He emailed me again and said how excited he is to get out there and work.

So this week was pretty slow cause the holidays, and many people are out of town or they are with their families. So not a lot of contacting or seeing our investigators, which was hard. We did have many good dinner appointments with members though. Our Thanksgiving dinner was fabulous. The dad in the family owns a catering company so we were well taken care of. The Thanksgiving dinner was great and all and the only thing that could have made it better was having my family all around me. Families are truly one of the most important things in this life. I know that I have one of the greatest families here on earth and the blessings they have been in my life. It takes me back to the scripture that brought comfort to me in the MTC D&C 100:1. The Lord truly does look out for our families when we are away spending time doing the Lord's work. I have noticed how true this is. My week has been full of Thanks. I miss all of you so much! Stay Safe!

An Inventor, a Cook, and a Preacher

GO BIG BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ah man that is the best news I have heard all week! Still not as good as last year!!!!! So they announced Dad on the radio as honorable mention in the biggest loser hahahaha. Yeah I sent back some things to Dillon telling him to always look for the positive in everything and some other stuff trying to calm him haha. I did hear about the appendix scare from Chan and Payt. Im glad everything is okay!

So this week was pretty good it started on Tuesday as a walking day where we walked until 5:00 without using cars. But the cool part was our dinner. It was with this family, the Hodsons, who are pretty well off. haha Anyway Sister Hodson fed us and the food was amazing! Her husband was out of town because he goes to Hong Kong for work all the time. He invents new things like a self sustaining house. But the cool part is that their daughter is actually serving her mission in Hong Kong which is pretty cool. They told us one of her stories when she was asked to play the piano for an executive meeting for a bunch of the Chinese executives I guess. After the meeting was over, she left them with a message of the Restoration and every one of the Chinese Executives wanted to learn more, or wanted a Book of Mormon. It was a cool story!

After that Wednesday thru Saturday were filled with teaching. We picked up a new investigator named Amir. He is super cool but is kind of distracted easily. Anyway we asked him to come to church and he said he would. He actually came with his Mom which was a surprise, so we are gonna plan on teaching her too. Her name is Maria.

Sunday was great, we had the usual things happen. Amir and Maria showed up which was great. But the totally cool part was our dinner. Brother Spackman, had us over and fed us like Kings! He cooked a full chicken and gave us like half of the chicken each, then he had baked beans and potatoes that were glazed in garlic and parmesan! It was amazing. He ended with a pie that tasted like heaven! He was literally male version of Betty Crocker.

Sunday night we were going by Potentials and ran into this guy named Rigo, who literally gave us a sermon. haha We were standing on his porch for about 30 minutes with him just talking to us about grace and all the things he believes in but he doesn't have a religion and funny enough most the things he told us were in harmony with what we know to be true.

Anyway, Santa Barbara is pretty awesome! I am loving the weather and the ocean! I love you all, Stay Safe!

Sunshine, Ocean and Meatloaf?

Aw, man you guys stink so much! Going to Hawaii? I suppose that's okay cause I am living in Paradise here in Santa Barbara! hahaha. Oh and that's kinda cool you saw Mitt Romney! But I have two words, Barack Obama, hahaha. I hope Maddy is doing okay! And I am so happy and glad to hear the Grizz are back in the championship game but not at Boise's field??

Sunshine, The Ocean, and ..... meatloaf?

So I got to Santa Barbara on Tuesday which was literally the best thing ever! I was very sad to leave Newbury Park but its okay I will be back! I got here Tuesday and things happened pretty slowly. Not much happened many people we talked to were not interested. Oh yeah and I met my new companion, his name is Elder Emerson, he is from Spokane Washington! He is pretty cool but if you take a Hobbit and give him the brain from Dug on Up that's Elder Emerson. But all jokes aside he might be my favorite companion yet. Wednesday was pretty normal too not much happened there until our dinner that night. I met brother Carlson who is one of the "dankest" members ever. haha He acts like a 17 year old but this guy is no joke like 40-60 maybe. haha He is awesome. He is literally hilarious. the other members are pretty normal though. Saturday was the other day quite a bit of action happened. We had a dinner with this family, the Stillwells, who told us they were feeding us meatloaf, and I was not excited. It was actually really good haha. They are a little different but they are really cool members. So that's my week. Pray for me to survive another in this terrible tropical paradise! haha
Love ya all!

Transferred to Santa Barbara . . . . I hit the jackpot!

I have had an amazing week!! The weeks fly by super quickly the big transfer day is tomorrow and I will be leaving Newbury Park sadly... butt I will be going to Santa Barbara!!! I got pretty lucky and I hit the jackpot I guess haha. I did get my phone and all the goodies as well. Thanks so much I really love you guys so much! I saw that the pizza oven is coming along really well in dad's email! The weather here is perfect tho! Sorry you can't have the sunny days I am having haha jk! I am so glad to hear the the Grizz are doing good! I will be cheering them on from here!

Ah, This week has been really good! Just really boring haha. We had another lesson with Seth and it went super well, we taught the Plan of Salvation and he understood everything due to the Spirit! It is so amazing seeing the work of God happen right before your eyes! I love the work so much. Anyway, Seth has been keeping his commitments in reading and he really wants to come to church but he has Lacrosse practice during church so he can't go. But he will try to make it work one of these weeks. I will be able to come back here for his baptism tho, cause that is definitely going to happen! I will be very sad to leave the Conejo Canyon Ward here in Newbury Park but I am excited to continue my journey on the 'Ventura Highway' haha Love you all!! so Much, Stay safe!!

So in these pics I am with my Zone leader Elder Pickett sitting in our apartment. He is super cool.
The next pic is of me and my comp, Elder Holm, and the two YSA sisters in our area!

Teaching the Restoration to Seth.

Things here have been pretty good. Monday-Wednesday went pretty slowly, but as soon as we got to Thursday everything was great! So last week on Saturday, maybe, we were out around 8 pm and we wanted to go by this teenagers house who is 17 because he is in the area book but nobody has gone by him. Anyway we go by around 8:15 and he isn't there so we decide to go around the neighborhood and come back later. 8:30 rolls around and we go back but he still isn't there so we decide to call it a night and go back to the apartment and try again another day. But before we got to our car I had the urge to go back again, and as soon as we walked up to the driveway the teenager, his name is Seth, pulled up in his truck. We talked to him for a bit and asked him if he wanted to meet up for a lesson sometime and he said yes, he would love that! We were already excited about that. So back to Thursday just this past week, we have a Restoration lesson with Seth at the church building, and it was literally the most spiritual lesson I have ever been apart of. We gave him the information and the Spirit taught him. It was amazing! We set up a follow up appointment too for this week on Halloween actually haha. But on Saturday during our Halloween ward party one of Seth's friends came up to us and told us that Seth had called him after the lesson and told him that he had gotten a good feeling that he had never felt before when we taught him. It was literally the coolest thing ever. I can't wait to keep teaching him. That was pretty much the highlight of this week! Besides that we ran into a few potential investigators while tracting. We have a few more appointments this week as well. My week has been great!

I hope you are all safe, I love you all!

Zone Conference, Exchanges and a Towed Car

This week was kind of funny. But not as funny as dad in a dress! haha So Monday thru Wednesday we didn't have a car but we were able to visit members for dinner and some investigator visits. But Thursday was our Zone Conference and we had been able to ask President if we could get a car due to ankle issues and my companions bronchitis. And President Nakken got us a car which was great, everything we did after that was so great, we set up an appointment with a 17 year old kid named Seth and we drove around and saw a few of our less active members. Then came Saturday we went on exchanges with our zone leaders in Westlake Village and we had a great day. I went with Elder McCurdy who is a really cool guy, he is from Grace, Idaho. Anyway we had a great day. We were tracting and knocked on the door of this guy named Lawrence and taught him the Restoration on the spot which went really well. I was able to share Omni 1: 26 with him and it was kinda cool, he kinda broke it down and thought about it a while. He seemed super nice and possibly interested. That night as we were getting ready to finish exchanges and head back to Newbury Park it was around 9:30 already and the drive from Westlake to Newbury is about 30 minutes so we decided to spend the night at the Zone leaders in  Westlake. The issue was that my companion and the other zone leader, Elder Pickett, drove our car we got on Thursday and parked it in a guest parking spot accidentally overnight. So it got towed. We had the car for two days and we already lost it. It was so terrible haha. Anyway we got the car back after my companion payed 380 dollars to get it back from the towing company. So that was my week haha! I hope all is well there, stay safe and warm haha sorry bout the snow and cold! Its like 100 degrees here still, its ridiculous! I Love you all

"It is good to be motivated by duty; it is so much better to be motivated by love"

This week has been great we were able to teach our investigators Tyler and Gia the Restoration and they seemed to take it super well. They are pretty religious and things seem to just click with them and the Gospel. We also met with a potential investigator named Todd and had a brief Restoration lesson with him, but he said that everything we told him was pretty much what he believed in so he didn't think it would be important to be baptized which was kinda crazy and weird. But he seemed really cool, we also left a Book of Mormon with him and committed him to read it. It's hopeful that he will read it and the Spirit will be able to touch his heart and he'll want to meet with missionaries in the future. We also had a bit of a bash with Jason who happens to be a Jehovah's Witness. He met with us and really just tried to tell us what we believed in which was kind of annoying but he seemed really nice and friendly. He even loves Sun Valley which was pretty cool.

The Gredings are one of my favorite member families, they feed us at least once a week and are just so fun and nice to be around. The Congellieres, also a member family, are super nice too. Probably my two favorite member families I have met so far. They are so good at doing missionary work.

Besides working on resting my ankle and serving the Lord, I have also been able to work on my own personal testimony of the work and how important it is to the people out here. I have seen many people struggling financially and I just wish I could help them in some way, and I CAN by sharing with them the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I truly love my Savior Jesus Christ and I love the work each day. One thing I learned about doing any type of work or service is that to be efficient and good you have to add Love to what motivates you. Elder Wakolo of the seventy taught us that "It is good to be motivated by duty; It is so much better to be motivated by love" Which rings true to me.

I love all of you and I hope the best for you as well.

Sprained ankle and bronchitis

This week hasn't been to exciting we spent a lot of time in the apartment because I was resting my sprained ankle and my companion has bronchitis. Things have been pretty slow but I'm hanging in there. So not really new updates so say!

That is so great to hear about all that is happening back home! The new pizza oven is really coming along. In the last picture I sent is a pic of me pointing at a spider I killed! I am still loving it each day!

I hope all is well and you're all safe, Love you all!

General Conference was AMAZING!

This week has been great! My new comp is Elder Holm, he is from Utah. I am excited to learn from him! We were able to find 2 new investigators, Tyler and Gia. They are really cool and open to listening to the Gospel. Hopefully as we teach them they can progress. We also got 5 referrals which is amazing! Our ward here is great at missionary work!

We spent a lot of time on bikes and walking this week as well! I'll send some pics! We also did some service and I was able to kill a giant spider we found haha. I am having so much fun out here it has been good to change a bit of my lifestyle and doing the Lord's work.

General conference was amazing, all the missionaries in our zone all came to the stake center to watch conference. My favorite part/parts were Elder Richard J. Maynes talk on integrity and a quote from Elder John C. Pingree. He said "Are we living in a way that God can work through us?" That stuck with me because of how applicable it should be to us. We should ask ourselves that each day.

I hope all is well back home and I love you all!!

End of 1st transfer! I'm staying...companion, gone.

That is so cool that SKYLINE WON AGAIN!!! haha I miss Skyline so much! I am not gonna lie when I say that I was kinda rootin for the Tigers in our ward too! haha. I am glad Addi is liking Cheer! Winter here is pretty nice! It never dips below 60 degrees, and even then it gets really cold to me cause I am used to the heat now.

I haven't run into Elder Jarnagin yet but I have seen him in pictures. He seems like a cool kid. I use my debit card a lot because... idk I just do haha.

This week marks the end of my first transfer and I can't believe how fast things have gone. I will be getting a new companion but I will be staying in Newbury Park for another transfer which I am really excited for!

This first transfer has been interesting but just so amazing spiritually. I have never been so humbled by the Gospel until I came out here which is kinda bad to say but I am glad I was able to feel this way. i love what I am doing and I don't want to see it go too quickly.

Love you all so much!!

Friday Night Lights are hard to pass by

This week has been better but still pretty slow. We haven't had much contact with any investigators or less actives. Our district is having some difficulties due to leadership issues and things like that.

We haven't had many cool things happen yet but my area is supposedly one of the hardest in the missions and chances are that I will be here for another transfer. Speaking of which the first transfer is almost done, we just have one week left too it has gone by really quick.

It was cool we had two general authorities come, Elder Schweitzer, and Elder Wakolo who is a newly called seventy.

I can't believe that they are gonna build a new high school! That is crazy. It is weird school has been going for a few weeks here in California and it is weird not being in school anymore. At times I miss school but I am so glad I am done with it.

The Emotion bowl is this week? Wow that has gone quickly, I will be rooting for the boys in blue. I also miss football a ton. It has been difficult to not stop and watch the high school football games here on Friday Nights haha.

The holiday season is approaching quickly and we will be lucky here if the temperature gets below 70 haha.

I love you all!

Helping out the piano teacher to Kanye West, Mariah Carey and Twenty One Pilots

Everything has been okay haha This week was pretty unproductive to say the least. My TRAINER thought it would be okay if we didn't even go proselyting this week so we didn't. He is pretty casual with being a missionary. It bothers me a ton but I just hope I can last another week until I can make it to transfer day.

So quick, cool story. This week we went out of our area to help a member in a different area, Westlake Village. Where literally everyone there is kinda rich haha. Anyway this member is really cool, she had us do service for here and she told us a little about herself. She was Kanye West's piano teacher when he was taking piano lessons, she has also worked with other celebrities like Mariah Carey  and a few bands like Twenty One Pilots. She said that she is throwing a Halloween party on October 1st and she said that it is a possibility that celebrities might show up haha but she invited us missionaries to the party! So thats pretty cool huh?

I went on exchanges this week with the zone leaders and I went with Elder Allison who is from Rexburg. He is actually cousins with someone I knew from High School so that is kinda cool too! Anyway when I was with him it was the only time that I got to actually do missionary work which felt good because we got to talk to a lot of people and we found a few potential investigators.

So this week hasn't been the most productive but it definitely has been interesting! I still enjoy being out here no matter how my companion acts. Love you all!

105-110* Here In Newbury Park

So this week was horrible. For the entire week the average temperature was about 105 degrees. A few days it got up to 110, and no lower than 90. So to say the least its been pretty warm here in Newbury Park.

The people here are really nice and really rich haha. Some of the houses of members are literally gigantic. So thats pretty cool. Also the investigators don't really want to listen to the Gospel. But we continue to go out and do work.

Not much has really happened here except for the heat and also we got some rain which is pretty rare. It's funny because most of my district here leaves this transfer or next. So I am the newbie among all the seasoned veterans haha.

That's pretty much my week! I love and miss you all!

Despicable Me and the original Gru

Hey!!
This week has been really fast to be honest. Here we only got to see about 40% of the eclipse it was petty cool to say the least haha. I miss being out to those Rammell parties but it only helps me look forward to the future. Yeah seeing Matt was pretty crazy and totally unexpected. Turns out he lives down here in a city called Westlake Village which is pretty ritzy of an area.

Wow that is totally crazy about Uncle Max, but I am glad he is in a better place now. I am so proud of Addi! She looks so good sporting the Skyline Blue!! How good is our football team this year?? I heard about the Hurricane and its pretty crazy what I have been told!

Dang getting old is no fun mom, haha just kidding! I have had so much fun here and I love teaching people the gospel. Tell Jackie I miss her! haha

So this week here has been fun I went on exchanges with the zone leaders who are in the Westlake Village area and it was pretty cool seeing the people there. Lots of big houses! We did some service helping out with Eagle projects with some of the ward youth. I got to meet this family, The Daurios,  who the dad actually wrote the movie Despicable Me! It was pretty cool he wrote the movie about his family haha so in other words I got to meet the real Gru. We also had dinner at the home of the man who invented the ethernet cable and the HDMI cable. So it was a VERY big house. It literally had a tennis court a swimming pool and many other cool things just in the back yard. But the house was super cool.

The football season has started here and it has been fun driving by the stadiums seeing the Friday Night Lights! haha

My companion and I have been teaching this 92 year old WWII vet that can't hear or see very well, but he enjoys the missionary discussions a ton, his name is Milton.

Anyway I love you all so much!
-Elder Smith

Hey dad, everything has been great! Yeah that was really weird seeing Matt haha out of all people in the world haha. Newbury Park is super nice it reminds me a bit of IF it's just so different in terms of everything haha. A lot of the teenagers here are big surfer kids so they go to the beach almost daily. My area is actually pretty small in terms of areas. It is actually the only biking area in the mission which is crazy because there are a ton of areas total. My companion is really cool he is from Syracuse Utah and he is a really good wrestler. His name is Elder Anderson. Yeah this first transfer has been great so far I haven't had any issues with anything. I am glad the dogs are doing good. Getting any bigger?? I miss and love you guys so much!

Happy to be in California

So my first week has actually gone by super fast! I have loved every second of it since I landed in Santa Barbara. We had lunch on the beach in a place called Goleta with the mission president and the senior missionaries. And then we drove to Oxnard to meet our new companions and find out our first areas.

My companion's name is Elder Anderson, he is from Syracuse Utah and he's a really cool guy. He is the district leader of my first district in my first area, Newbury Park, which is about 30 minutes from Oxnard. It's not too hot and its been really fun. I think my favorite scripture would have to be D&C 100:1. Its when Joseph and Sidney Rigdon are away from their families and God tells them how he is watching over them and keeping them safe.

This first week me and my trainer both whitewashed into the area, meaning neither of us have been in the area before. So we met a lot of the members in the ward here. We also talked with some of the former investigators in this area and they are all kinda interesting people haha. I have had so much fun talking to people and eating dinner at member's homes.

My apartment is actually really nice we keep it around 60 degrees because me and my companion both like it really cold haha. We have our own washing machine and dryer so that's pretty nice.

We sort of saw the eclipse but not really. This morning we all went on a hike as a district and that was pretty cool. I will send pictures soon.

Anyway I love you all and I am so happy to be out here.

Hey dad, its been a crazy week but its gone quick and I love it so much. I think that’s hilarious that you bought a Big Foot, its perfect haha. How is Beau doing? Is he getting bigger? The food is really good and the people are too they just are a little crazy haha.

Give Addi a big hug for me and pet Bart and Beau for me. Love ya dad-Elder Smith

Elder Bender's Q & A at the MTC

This week has been really good. We had many great lessons, and my branch president shared a scripture with me that gave me huge comfort. It's D&C 100:1. It’s God talking to Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon while they were away from their families. Anyway it really helped me cope and feel more comfortable here. I still can't wait to get out of here haha but the Spirit has definitely helped me feel calm and determined.

Anyway besides that our week hasn't really been that different other than helping with the Tours and running into Shayna haha. How is the family doing? How's dad's project coming along?

Oh yeah last night, which was Sunday, we were having our night devotional and we watched Elder Bednar's character of Christ talk he gave which is our second time watching it. We were a bit confused because we were actually asked  and required to watch it. After the recording of the talk was over we were all anxious to get to our dorms and sleep, but the MTC workers asked us to stay seated and we were all super confused. Then the big conference room we were in, everybody stood up and we were super confused as to why until we were able to sit down. We all noticed at the same time, all of us meaning over 150 missionaries in one room, that Elder Bednar was actually here at the MTC everybody went crazy! It was so cool. He did a Q and A and everything he said and taught definitely has helped me understand much more about things I already knew.

The MTC isn't all that it's cracked up to be but it is a very spiritual place where we as missionaries grow and learn to become more as Christ is. I wouldn't ever want to go through this again but I would also never want to forget the experience I have had here.

To answer your questions, I fly out of here on the 14th of August and yes I will be able to call you from the airport. The box of goodies you sent have not been eaten entirely but the district has definitely been grateful! I have taken a few pictures I may be able to send some later. So for our exercise time we have here I usually play basketball with my district. The funniest thing that has happened so far would have to be when we were in class and me and one of the other Elders in the district could not stop laughing, we weren't laughing at anything in particular but we just couldn't stop laughing! And I believe I answered the last question with my little story up above.

Let Grandpa, Jay, and Grammy know how much I love them, I miss them all so much.

I love that song (Hercules “Go the Distance”) so much it always helped me realize I can do hard things.

Love, Elder Smith

Goodbyes are the hardest!

Payton, Alex, Chandler

Addison and Alex

Headed to the "Drop-off"

One last hug for his little sister.

Bear hug for Mama.
One last look back, MTC Drop off.
After lunch on our way to the MTC

Dear Family,

The first day/days were pretty rough actually, but after I made it to Sunday I felt much better, I've been learning a ton about bringing others unto Christ and my purpose as a missionary. I have never felt the spirit more than when I set foot on campus here.

Yeah I've seen a bunch of my friends, like Brady and Cole. I even saw Derek Hurst. But when I saw Straton he wrapped me up in a big bear hug! I've had so much fun here!

I didn't cry much at all in fact everybody in my district here at the MTC seems to be doing really well! Oh yeah also I was called as District leader of 8 companionships total 6 of which are Elders and the other two are Sisters! They are all very amazing people in their own way.

The food is pretty good, I like it enough to eat it again each day! Haha

I honestly feel that I have the best teachers on campus! Brother Hollingshead and Brother Jenkins are their names; they have helped me so much in teaching me to come closer to God.

So my P-day is Tuesday here at the MTC, but when I get out to California it will change to Monday.

Send me a whole bunch of snacks! I do have time to come back and rest for a little bit and snack! Haha also the space that you've been putting a "?" Is supposed to be the number 155.

I love you so much mama, let Addi know how much I love her and give her a big hug for me! You will all be in my prayers! Miss you and love you tons!

Love, Elder Smith
